Aside from watching our budgets, are we adding new tools to our professional toolbox (e.g. Web 2.0 technologies) and polishing off our resumes? Have we checked out job listings of interest to see which skills are needed to get a desirable position or move up in our current organization? Is volunteering for a professional association or other organization helping with networking and learning new skills (while helping others)? One of my favorite fast reads is Who Moved My Cheese? (Spencer Johnson. NY: Putnam, 1998.) In an illustration entitled “The Handwriting on the Wall” (p. 74), the author sums it all up with some great tidbits of wisdom. My favorites are:
- Anticipate change: get ready for the cheese to move
- Adapt to change quickly: the quicker you let go of the old cheese, the sooner you can enjoy the new cheese
- Enjoy change! Savor the adventure and enjoy the taste of the new cheese!
